I think there will always be a necessity, even in small groups like this, for an imageboard. A forum doesn't serve the same purpose. Forums are about idea sharing. Imageboards are about content sharing. I think eventually someone will make imageboard 3.0 that modernizes it and brings it away from the "taboo" nature, into the normie world.
As is, with youtube seemingly pushing content creators away in favor of the big money with music videos, I think the time is ripe for a new platform for those types of creators. A cool idea would be an imageboard whose main focus is on videos, probably in webm format, that would promote OC with something like reddit's gold system. The platform gets the money, and the person who received the gold gets added benefits and recognition for their work, paid for by the content consumer.
